Abstract
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has a long history of constructing dams on problematic, karstic foundations. The first dam built by TVA, Norris, is founded on the Knox Group and presented considerable challenges in addressing the numerous solution features beneath the dam. In addition to dams built by TVA, TVA has also remediated karst issues at dams that were acquired from other owners, for example, Hales Bar and Great Falls dams. In many cases, TVA geologists and engineers were on the cutting edge of karst treatment technology. While most TVA dams built on karst foundations have performed well, a few have required re-treatment of karst conditions. Karst conditions are present to varying degrees at most TVA dams and these conditions will continue to present challenges to maintaining safe dams as TVAs dam inventory ages.
